The motor and control board can now be replaced. Make sure that the motor position sensor switch is connected properly as it is vital to how the wheel works. The three power cables are marked RBY for red , blue and yellow or white leads. The direct drive is actually a 3 phase motor and the control board does the work of converting the single phase input into the output required for the motor. The old tri-leg direct drives were simple to connect the power to the motor because the control board was also marked with RBY(W) but the new board has markings that relate to power symbols rather than cord colors. U, V and W on the board and working out which goes to which is proving problematic.

The older direct drives had a recall done where a pedal isolation daughter board was installed to prevent electric shock if the pedal got damaged or wet. Circled in yellow on the photo. These new boards don’t need to have it as the isolation is built in. The power connection lanyard circled in red needs to go under the control board so it doesn’t get damaged by the motor rotor. I have temporarily replaced the power cables in the original order that was on the old direct drives but won’t actually run it until I get to see another similar setup on another wheel. Venco have supplied the correct connection information so that I suspect will be the right way.
The way I had the power connection was wrong but when I changed it to the way Venco had suggested it worked fine.
I mentioned the cost in the video but the pedal seemed a bit flaky so I put on the new one I had purchased and it was good. There is also the cost of the newer wheel head so material cost all up was about $700 plus the 10 hours labor. Happy with that.
