Part 1 Replace Bearings

I acquired a 2020 model Venco direct Drive wheel from a customer who didn’t want to pay the cost of a full refurbishment of her wheel. The wheel had been well used and was missing vital parts and the previous owner had made some really weird repairs to try and get it going. She bought it in a not running condition.

After cleaning it up.

Basically it was well munted, and needed bearings replaced, new touchpad, replacement of motor position sensor, replacement of control board and possibly a new motor.

The first job was to strip it down and try and get the motor off so I could replace the bearings.

Video part 1 Assessing the situation.

The bearings in this model are 6005DD. Relatively cheap and reliable. The homemade bearings puller is just some bits of hardwood planks and a couple of G clamps. It took a bit of tension to get the wheel head up but doable with this setup. Once out replacing the bearings is relatively straightforward.

Once the wheel head unit is out and everything is cleaned up, a bit of grease is applied to the bearing housing in the tray. Be gentle knocking the bearing in, it’s a tightish fit but shouldn’t need a lot of force to get it in there. Once the top bearing is in the wheel is tipped over with a block of wood supporting the wheel head underneath so it is in the right position for the bottom bearing to be replaced.

This is part one of the series on refurbishing the Direct Drive. Next part will deal with the motor assembly and testing components to see if they are working correctly.
